Hunter Express equips 600+ trucks across four terminals in 3 fast phases

With its previous ELD hardware reaching end of life, Hunter Express moved its Canadian and U.S. fleets to Samsara on a locked-down Samsung tablet package from Grizzly Tab, with every terminal ready before the switch went live.

The Challenge

An ELD switch, a cross-border fleet, and new trucks arriving every month

Hunter Express is a Brampton, Ontario carrier that has moved LTL, truckload, temperature-controlled, and cross-border freight across Canada, the U.S., and Mexico since 2005. It runs four terminals, two in Ontario, one in Michigan, and one in Texas, with a fleet of 600+ company-owned tractors. In 2026, with its previous ELD hardware reaching end of life, Hunter chose Samsara, whose vehicle gateways and dash cams were already installed across the fleet.

Samsara's Driver App needed a screen in every cab on both sides of the border. The tablets had to be affordable at fleet scale, locked to the apps drivers actually use, and simple for Hunter's own team to manage, all while new trucks joined the fleet every month and the rest stayed on the road.

Moving to Samsara was the right call for our fleet. Grizzly Tab made the in-cab side easy: a tablet in every truck at a price that worked, locked down to exactly what our drivers need.

The Solution

A cost-effective Samsung package, locked down and ready to install

Grizzly Tab supplied a Rugged Tablet Bundle, tablet and cab mount together, for every truck, with every device managed by Grizzly Tab MDM, all for one flat price per unit. Powered directly from the Samsara Vehicle Gateway, each tablet installs in under 15 minutes and runs only the apps Hunter's drivers need. Because the package is built around the Samsara hardware already in the truck, any Samsara fleet can roll it out the same way.

Three phases, timed to the trucks arriving

Hunter scaled on its own schedule, starting with 50 tablets for new trucks in June, with first units on site within a week of the order. A second phase in July put tablets in all four terminals before Samsara's ELDs went live, and the main wave in August equipped the rest of the fleet, for 600+ Rugged Tablet Bundles across Canada and the U.S.

“We started with fifty tablets and scaled to the whole fleet once the team was comfortable. Every phase showed up exactly when our trucks needed it.”

Mounts & Power

One mount, one cable, no fuse-box wiring

Every truck runs a single cable from the Samsara gateway to the tablet, so there's no hardwiring in any cab. With a Grizzly Tab mount in every truck, installs take under 15 minutes per truck, quick enough for mechanics to fit between runs, and tablets stay charged through the driver's entire shift.

“Our mechanics could install a tablet between runs. One mount, one cable, and the truck was back on the road.”

Fleet-wide control, managed by Hunter's own team

Hunter's safety and compliance team manages every tablet from one console, with no on-site help needed. Each device is 100% locked to the Samsara Driver App and the handful of apps Hunter approves, and nothing else. Drivers connect to the truck's hotspot automatically, with no passwords to type, and when settings need to change, updates go out over the air with no service visits.

When Hunter added Drivewyze weigh-station bypass alongside Samsara, the permissions it needed were pushed to every tablet remotely, and bypass alerts were live across the fleet within a couple of days, without a single truck coming off the road.

“We manage more than 600 tablets across two countries ourselves. When something needs to change, we push it out and trucks pick it up automatically, without anyone touching a device.”
